Additional information

This work formed part of a DEFRA Foodlink programme (Project AFM227, “Non-contact ultrasonic quality inspection of food products”), with four partners from the food industry. The work was also patented for potential subsequent exploitation by the Foodlink partners (US Patent: US10/505,807, “Method of Inspecting Foodstuffs and/or Associated Packaging”). On-line inspection trials have taken place at Kerrygold Ltd (cheese) and Westler Foods (meat), and off-line for chocolate (Cadburys PLC) and dough (Bakemark Ltd). The spectroscopy allows the identification of contaminants or changes in quality that are not detectable by X-rays or metal detectors, giving added value to the UK food industry.
