Additional information
First ever human study to document the interaction between free radicals and vascular endothelial function in the aged as a function of exercise training status. Contrary to conventional wisdom, antioxidant prophylaxis in the aged “following exercise training” was shown to impair (rather than improve) vascular endothelial function with return to a hypertensive state. Collectively, these paradoxical findings have important clinical implications and suggest a need for caution when combining exercise and acute antioxidant supplementation in the aged.
