Mass Custom Design for Sustainable Housing Development
This chapter is published in Pillar and Tseng’s edited book, ‘Handbook of Research in Mass Customization and Personalization’, a 1,122-page research handbook collating research into the emerging notion of ‘mass customisation’ and how it has been implemented in various industry and academic settings globally. The book was developed in collaboration with the contributors of the 2007 World Conference on Mass Customization and Personalization held from 7th to 10th October 2007 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA.
In his chapter Noguchi argues that as societal pressure on sustainable housing development is on the rise, homes need to be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable in response to the wants and needs of individual homebuyers/users as well as society. Mass customization is presented as one of the potential means to tackle issues arising in achieving housing sustainability. Based on the notion, a systems approach to sustainable homes and the interactive design communication tool are introduced.
Dr Noguchi’s conceptual mass custom design system model was introduced based on his previous publications dating back to his first invited public lecture on the Mass Custom Home (Vivienda Personalizada Masiva) in 2001 at Simposium Internacional: Prospectiva Urbanaen Latinoamerica hosted by Secretaría de Desarrollo Social & la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes. 8 September, 2001; “Simposium Internacional Prospectova Urbana en Latinoamérica, en la UAA,” El Heraldo, Local p. 8, 1st September, 2001; “Información estaística adecuada demandan a lnegi los impresores,” Hidrocalido, p. 2A, 1st September, 2001; CH Montreal TV, Arigato, Guest Interview on Mass Custom Homes, Productions GFP Inc., January 25, 2003; and CH Montreal TV, Arte Mondo, Guest Interview on PV Mass Custom Homes, Productions GFP Inc., December 18, 2005 and 16th November 2011 at Simpósio Brasileiro de gestão e Economia da Construção in Belem, Brazil.
