Cone photoreceptor mosaic disruption associated with Cys203Arg mutation in the M-cone opsin
This international collaboration used high-resolution retinal imaging of the living eye in individuals with defective colour vision. Feedback-controlled adaptive optics was employed to overcome the eye's aberrations. The results, reported in one of the leading multidisciplinary scientific journals, revealed a previously unknown losses of photoreceptor cells in affected individuals. The findings have been built on by others investigating genetic defects of vision (e.g. DOI: 10.1038/eye.2011.87, DOI: 10.1167/iovs.12-11156) and incorporated into reviews (e.g. DOI: 10.1017/S0952523812000429). The work was an outgrowth of a Wellcome Trust grant to Foster and was also funded by the National Eye Institute in the USA, among others.
