Additional information

The writing of this article, published in early 2011, was part of work in progress leading up to Scanlan’s monograph Memory: Encounters with the Strange and Familiar (2013). The three main sections of the article formed the basis for pp. 87-108 in the monograph, but were significantly rewritten and expanded to highlight the ways in which certain technologies contribute to problematizing what Scanlan refers to as a ‘surfeit of memory / reality’. This alters the focus of the research and turns it towards the wider concerns of the book, which were not fully developed at the time the article was submitted.
