Additional information

Supported through the international FP7 OPTHER (Optically Driven THz Amplifier) project, this research reports the invention of the double corrugated waveguide, a device that has allowed for the fabrication of the first 1 THz amplifier. Novelty lies in the structure being able to not only support THz frequencies, but also a cylindrical electron beam and be fabricated by photolithography, the only technology suitable for the dimensions required. Thales-ED are studying the structure for realising THz Travelling Wave Tubes (TWTs) in the context of new EU projects while E2V are exploring its use in innovative low cost TWTs at millimeter wavelengths.
