Additional information
The editors were responsible for conceiving this original research subject, for selecting the invited international contributors to the volume and for successfully applying to the British Academy for a research grant to bring them all together. The editors’ introduction is substantive and crucial to the volume’s integrity in arguing for a new critical concept of ‘registration as recognition’ in the humanities. Many eminent authors of the 19 chapters were stimulated by the original invitation to undertake entirely new research on their countries’ histories (e.g. Saito on Japan, Rosental on France, van Leeuwen on Holland).
