Additional information
This paper addressed the apparently simple problem of how to fold a shopping bag, made of relatively stiff material, without stretching the material. The problem was addressed by a combination of relatively sophisticated mathematics using quaternions with a an inventive approach. The particular result is a novel solution for folding a shopping bag, but the techniques employed could have much wider application both within and beyond the packaging industry. The novelty of the study resulted in a two page research profile report on the author's work of origami structures in Science (Science, 332, pp. 1376-77).
