Additional information

This paper presents a new set of methods to map marine habitats with multibeam sonar. The paper leads a Special Issue dedicated to benchmarking seafloor habitat mapping with multibeam sonars. It stems from an international collaboration led by Blondel. This work is identified by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive as the best to reliably measure seafloor integrity. These new methods have been adopted for habitat mapping (e.g., Fisheries and Oceans Canada, IFREMER, Geological Survey of Canada, NOAA, University of New Hampshire), geo-hazard assessment (National Oceanography Centre, NIWA-NZ) and sonar simulators (U. Szczecin, Poland). The work is interdisciplinary with physics.
