Double-weighted statement

The text and notes of ‘The Development of Ethics, Volume III: From Kant to Rawls’ together amount to 1020 pages. The writing of the book required the reading of many thousands of pages of original sources and background material, the reading of the voluminous secondary literature on these sources, and the reading of contemporary literature in moral philosophy, to produce an account of the relevant historical development and a critical examination of the philosophical issues. This volume therefore required more time and effort, and has considerably wider scope, than would have been required for a journal article.
