Additional information

The paper provides a new theoretical approach to describe mass transfer in pressure driven membrane processes such as Forward Osmosis. It incorporates membrane properties, solute molecular structure with feed solution physical properties. It is the first theoretical development to incorporate all these effects. The model has been validated experimentally, where a good agreement is obtained and the results were published in part-II in the same Journal. This fundamental work underpins the demonstration trials in the Modern Water forward osmosis desalination plants in Oman and Gibraltar.
