Refocusing the practice of service design in socially responsible contexts
This builds on Young’s earlier work (Design for Services, Designing for the 21st Century RCUK Programme) reflecting on the relationship between design theory and service design practice to clarify the difference between the professional roles of business strategists and designers in the context of service development for business.
Young extrapolates the context of service co-design practice to designing with third sector communities to explore the inadequacies of the conceptual role that the designer assumes. The research begins by exploring our conceptual understanding of the designer’s role in the co- design of socially responsible contexts to align actions and intentions to help this refocus. A conceptual map of the nature and purpose of service co-design is constructed based on philosophical references. The interrelationship and patterns of connection between the concepts is refined based on understanding derived from doctoral studies projects and successive presentation of the conceptual model to service design workshops and conferences, including: Design4Context, Participatory, Interdisciplinary and Co(Design) Colloquium, University of Zurich (April 2011).
