Characterisation of palm empty fruit bunch (PEFB) and pinewood bio-oils and kinetics of their thermal degradation
Oils from the fast pyrolysis of substantial wastes from agriculture and forestry (palm empty fruit bunches, wood) are evaluated as feedstock for upgrade to advanced fuel (hydrogen, biofuel), or direct use in combustion. This paper shows for the first time how bio oil properties are used to derive numerical indicators of performance in combination with each other, which can be utilised as a selection method for optimum post-processing. Subsequent work showed the potential of integrating biological with thermochemical processes of hydrogen production, spurring recent collaboration with The university of Glamorgan.
