This is the preliminary investigation of the behaviour of grandstands under human induced vibrations. The research was supported by Bison Concrete Products Ltd (Mr Peter Kelly, currently: Technical Director, Spiroll Precast Services Ltd, Derby, DE22 3FP). It was the first time that full size concrete terrace units were brought into the laboratory for testing to failure. This has added to knowledge of their structural performance and contributed to comfort and safety of users. Hence the research has served as a benchmark for other investigations. Also, it helped to calibrate and validate a successful numerical model summarized in Output 2.
