This paper defines experimentally-validated operating equations for tissue engineering bioreactors; one reviewer commented “This is a nice piece of work..The perturbation analysis is formally carried out and the results are elegantly presented” (kristi.anseth@colorado.edu). The work led to invited talk (Environmental Fluid Mechanics Problems for the 21st Century at Princeton, USA 2011), grant award (Royal Society RG090466) and a “Young Researcher of the Year" award to Shipley from the UK Tissue and Cell Engineering Society in 2011. The paper initiated ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration with Dr Marianne Ellis (Bath University), supported by 2 PhD Studentships and £1M NC3Rs funding (Grant Ref 15386-106206).
