Additional information

This paper highlights the importance of formulation and controlling of material processing to achieve desirable structures and in vitro biocompatibility of titanium substituted hydroxyapatite (TiHA), which leads to increased attachment and proliferation of human osteoblast (bone forming) cells. The results of the research initiated applications of TiHA in dental implants through an IADR/GSK Innovation in Oral Care Award (Multifunctional nano-biomaterials for implant-based dental reconstruction products, 2010 (http://www.iadr.com/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3426); and it also led to a PhD studentship being awarded by Orthopeadic Research UK (2010) on the use of antimicrobial nanocoatings for next generation prostheses (Ref: 465, http://www.oruk.org/funding-research/research-projects/).
