Additional information

In this study, a recently developed nanocomposite polymer, already patented by UCL Business (Pat. No. WO2005070998), is assessed for heart valve applications. This has involved a complete investigation of the material behaviour in term of biological and mechanical performance. Following this validation, this nanocomposite polymer has been used in valve prototypes, and selected for a novel transcatheter valve under development at UCL (see Publication 3). A successive in vitro implantation study in a large animal model has confirmed in vitro findings about biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and resistance to degradation, inflammation or capsule formation.
