Double-weighted statement

This is a book of about 75,000 words. It results from study of the place of work and schooling in the lives of children during the years 1900-39, and from extensive archival research about the war years, using school histories, BBC and government documents and interviews. The book breaks new ground, in detailing English children’s contributions to the war effort, in contrast to the familiar stories about evacuation. The book brings to bear a sociological approach to childhood, through showing how children were regarded as members of society who could be asked to contribute their work to the war effort.
