Hellenische Identitaet in der Spaetantike: Pagane Autoren und ihr Unbehagen an der eigenen Zeit
This output is proposed to be double-weighted. This work is the equivalent of four years' dedicated investment of research time, and can be said to occupy the time and intellectual space of two normal items.
This study investigates the pagan Greek authors of the fourth century AD, including the emperor Julian, the rhetorician Libanius and the philosopher Themistius, and places them in their intellectual context. Stenger argues that the pagan intellectuals did not merely cling to the inherited values and attitudes but rather took up the challenges of the contemporary upheavals so that the traditional culture itself was transformed.
