Additional information

This paper quantified the magnitude of local strains and stresses in a real non-homogeneous scaffold. This enabled the determination of the real level of mechanical stimuli that cells are subjected to. The paper contributed significantly to the author's receipt of the Jean-Leray Award (European Society for Biomaterials, 2010), for outstanding research contributions to the field of biomaterials.
