Additional information

Since the seminal paper of Seireg and Arvikar (1973), muscle forces have always been predicted by assuming that the neuromuscular control works according to some optimality principle. While this assumption is confirmed in normal healthy individuals, it appears inadequate for subjects affected by various degrees of neuromuscular degradation. This paper investigates, for the first time in the biomechanics literature, how the neuromuscular degradation might overload the skeleton of a patient during apparently normal daily activities such as level walking. The NMS-PHYSIOME consortium is now building this probabilistic approach into one of the most popular modelling software packages worldwide, OpenSIM.
