Additional information

This paper describes the first successful non-invasive measurement of the very thin, yet critical, oil film that forms in mechanical face seals. Concepts from the NDT community based on ultrasonic reflection have been applied to this important tribological interface. The largest international seal manufacturer, John Crane Ltd (contact: Core Technology Manager) purchased instrumentation from our spin out company, Tribosonics Ltd. They use this to develop new seals and have published results independently. The US Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) awarded this paper the prestigious Frank P. Bussick Award in 2009.
