Additional information

This project was inspired by Mr Douglas Wharf, whilst a structural engineer at WSP. Mr Wharf found it difficult to design tapered tee cantilevers since there was no design guidance for them. This paper is the first to develop an analytical model to determine the lateral torsional buckling load of such beams. Mr Wharf said: “The research carried out provides vital further understanding of the structural behaviour of tapered steel tees. The findings provide a valuable advance in developing practical design methods, which are missing in current codes of practice” (doug.wharf@design-life.co.uk).
