Additional information

This paper reports the first realisation of an angular form of Doppler Velocimetry. We analyze the orbital angular momentum of normal light scattered from a rotating object, and show that the object's rotational speed can be inferred from a frequency shift of this light. Four news articles were published covering this work in Science News, Physics World, Physics Central and Science Now (www.gla.ac.uk/schools/physics/research/groups/optics/mediacoverage/). It has also been nominated for the Emil Wolf Prize at FIO 2013 (www.frontiersinoptics.com/home/). Remotely detecting the rotation of a body with an angular momentum directed along the observation direction has terrestrial and astronomical applications.
