Additional information

The paper describes a realizable technique for the efficient sorting of orbital angular momentum (OAM). The research was central to acquiring international funding from the DARPA InPho Programme (US Army Research Office Award W911NF- 10-1-0395), which focused on the use of OAM to encode information for dramatically increased data capacity over future optical communication links. The research was awarded the Emil Wolf prize at FIO 2011 (http://www.frontiersinoptics.com/home/), an invited presentation at Photon 12 (http://www.photon.org.uk/home) and three international seminars (USC, CCNY and JPL). We have distributed a device based on this technique, forming a collaboration network incorporating ten international partners.
