Additional information

The paper demonstrates the translational motion of a self-assembled magnetic walker consisting of a rotating magnetic chain. The system gives insight into the hydrodynamics at small length scales and is important to understand the motion of bacteria and cilia. The paper compares experiments of the Franke group to simulations and theoretical estimates of colleagues from MIT and Boston University. Patent applications have been filed in Germany as a direct result of the work on the manipulation of cells by magnetic forces ("Apparatus to manipulate small fluid volumes and containment", Deutsche Patentanmeldung 10 2008 005 673.1-43).
