Additional information

A theoretical analysis and the experimental demonstration of new circuit topologies for the accurate characterization of tunnel diodes (TDs) are described (EPSRC - GR/S75840/01, £121k - PI Wasige). TDs have potential as compact and low-cost terahertz sources for incorporation into portable imagining systems. These systems would replace the bulky and fixed units currently employed at airport security checks, in non-destructive testing, and in chemical and biological sensing. The work was pivotal in obtaining further EPSRC funding (EP/J019747/1, £583k - PI Wasige) and in establishing collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (richard.dudley@npl.co.uk) to develop compact terahertz imaging systems.
