Additional information

This paper demonstrates new filters for CMOS digital imaging chips that offer improved colour accuracy and reduced fabrication cost. We have replaced the conventional three separate coloured plastic filters with a carefully designed nano-hole array in a thin metal layer that generates colour by resonant interactions with incoming light. We have shown for the first time a double peak response that matches the red cones in the human eye, yielding better colour reproduction. The work is funded by EPSRC (EP/G008329/1, with Sharp and Oxford University) and led to an EPSRC CASE award with ST Microelectronics.
