The research in this paper concerns the fluid dynamics associated with the critical flight regime encountered by helicopters in descending flight, known as the vortex ring state. There are very few examples of experimental work in this branch of fluid dynamics and so the paper is a data resource for rotorcraft designers and helicopter operators. This paper results from an international collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley, who part funded a Visiting Researcher post, and the US Army/NASA Rotary Wing Research Group (NASA Ames Research Center Grant NCC2-5507).
