Additional information

This research led to an important change in industrial practice; the move towards non-symmetric laminate designs for use in future aircraft structures (Contact: Thomas Kruse, Fuselage and Generic Structure Design Research, Thomas.Kruse@Airbus.com). The article demonstrates that anti-symmetric laminate designs provide the highest damage tolerance with respect to delamination buckling, and that the best symmetric and non-symmetric laminate designs offer comparable damage tolerance. The research was the result of collaboration with the University of Bath (Contact: R.Butler@Bath.ac.uk).
