Additional information

This paper, written with collaborators at Stanford, USA, develops a theory of microbial population dynamics and applies it to data from a sewage works. The research was supported by an EPSRC Fellowship (EP/D073693/1). The theory has applications beyond waste-water. For example, medical and dental researchers have suggested it will explain community assembly of human associated microbes (DOI:10.1126/science.1224203), and agriculturists have used it for soil microbes (DOI:10.1890/11-1745.1). The research was presented in an invited talk at the 13th ISME (Seattle, USA 2010; http://www.isme-microbes.org/isme13/invited).
