Additional information

The paper characterises and optimises combined longitudinal-torsional vibration in a longitudinal-mode ultrasonic transducer, enabling novel transducers for planetary drilling. The research, funded by STFC (ST/F003586/1) in collaboration with EADS Astrium (Contact: Matthew.Stuttard@astrium.eads.net), subsequently led to a new collaboration with Magna Parva (Contact: andy.bowyer@magnaparva.com) through an EPSRC KTA grant (EP/H500138, £65k), resulting in successful trials, widely reported, on a mock-up of the Mars Rover at field tests in Tenerife. The paper led to invited presentations at CalTech JPL (Contact:ssherrit@jpl.nasa.gov) and the Ultrasonic Industry Association Symposium (Orlando, 2012), and an invited review paper in Ultrasonics (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ultras.2012.09.004).
