Additional information

The paper describes the up-conversion of infrared radiation to visible wavelengths and the dependence of this process on the concentration of the active dopant (erbium) in the host material (yttrium aluminium garnet; YAG). The combination of high erbium concentration and low levels of self-absorption indicates considerable performance improvements can be achieved over existing Er:YAG up-conversion lasers. Interest in the work has led to discussions with Teem Photonics (Jean-Edouard Communal, je.communal@teemphotonics.com) manufacturer of solid state lasers, the research complementing their existing product portfolio in microchip lasers.
