This paper describes the first demonstration of difference frequency generation using a novel post-growth quasi-phase-matching technique. It arises from an international collaboration with Prof. Aitchison at the University of Toronto into quasi phase-matching for the generation of new optical frequencies in a semiconductor waveguide format compatible with the integration of semiconductor diode laser pump sources. It was co-funded by EPSRC (EP/E009972/1) and NSERC, and led to an invited presentation at Photonics North 2010 (Ontario, Canada - DOI:10.1117/12.873093) . This research underpins further studies at the University of Toronto into entangled photon pair production for quantum information applications.
