Additional information

Various methods for extracting oil from flax seed are compared, including an oil expeller, solvent, and ultrasonic and microwave-assisted solvent extraction. The dependency on the extraction method as a function of moisture content is analysed and a figure of merit (FoM) is defined. The FoM allows comparison of the process efficiencies and the implications of scaling the processes. The importance of efficient and inexpensive methods of oil extraction has attracted interest from industry. Collaboration is under discussion with Prairie Tide Chemicals Inc. (Canada) which extracts high value peptides from Flax plant, (Contact: Youn-young Shim, younyoung.shim@prairietide.com).
