Additional information

The Cryptococcus neoformans capsule is implicated in pathologies associated with fungal infections of HIV patients by raising intracranial pressure by mechanical obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Working with The Infectious Disease Institute, Makerere University, Kampala, the paper investigated the ex-vivo CSF using 134 patient samples of HIV-infected people (contact: tbicanic@sgul.ac.uk). This truly international collaboration involved corroborative measurements in The Universities of Glasgow, Minnesota, St George's Medical School and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY. The work will inform the treatment of patients in Uganda and more broadly worldwide, on the role of fungal clearance and the CSF inflammatory response.
