Additional information

In this EU funded work, metamaterials (sub-wavelength structures) operating in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum are used as organic sensing elements. The key advance was to scale devices first developed in the microwave region by more than three orders of magnitude to match molecular vibrations in the infra-red. The devices have applications in organic material sensing and as gas sensors. The work is cited in Nature Materials Review (DOI:10.1038/nmat2810) and by Xiang Zhang of Berkeley (doi.org/10.1063/1.3194154), and has resulted in several invited talks including SPIE Photonics Europe 2010 (http://spie.org/x1848.xml) and Congress 2010 (http://congress2010.metamorphose-vi.org/)
