English abstract

This article was commissioned to provide a view of the current and historical state of dramaturgy in the UK. In general, dramaturgy has been as foreign to British theatre as it is to English theatre and performance scholarship, and it is far more established in continental European contexts. But there have been exceptions, including Kenneth Tynan at the National Theatre (significantly, his job-title was amended to 'Literary Manager', despite his own European and Brechtian ambitions). The (re)emergence of collective approaches to theatre-making in Britain has, surprisingly perhaps, led to a rise of dramaturgy, with implications for training and higher education.
