Mühlschlegel is a Consultant Microbiologist, Head of the Microbiology Service and Deputy Director of Laboratory Medicine for the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. Based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford (Kent), he manages a team that provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service for the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of infectious diseases. He was appointed to an academic post in the School of Biosciences at Kent in June 2001 and moved from a 0.6fte academic post to a full-time post in the NHS in April 2010. He was a founding member of the Kent Fungal Group in the School and has retained close research links with members of this Group. For example, he continued to co-supervise a PhD student (DiSordi) until she was awarded her PhD in 2012 and currently co-supervises a PhD student (Talpaert) with Gourlay investigating Candida biofilms. Since 2010 Mühlschlegel has co-authored 14 papers with School-based researchers (including two in 2013 and four in 2012) and has hosted visiting seminar speakers to the School (e.g. 2012: Professor Derrick Crook, Nuffield Dept Medicine, Oxford). Mühlschlegel is a co-inventor of a patent (US2007244174) that is administered by Kent’s Innovation & Enterprise department (KIE).
