Double-weighted statement

Catholicism in Modern Italy fills a huge gap in the history of religion/church and state relations in modern Europe because it provides the first comprehensive historical account in English of the Church and Catholics in Italy from Unification to the present. It is based on a wide variety of sources, contemporary print, archival and secondary, and draws on other studies of the role of Catholicism in modern Italy by the author, who is recognized world-wide as a leading authority in the field. The book is 97,000 words long and took about 3 years to write without benefit of sabbatical.
