Additional information

The residual stresses generated during welding can have significant detrimental effects on in-service structural performance. The advanced gas cooled reactor fleet hs suffered a number of instances of cracking at welds, caused by weld residual stress. This research formed a key part of a programme to understand the risk of cracking in boiler support structures. Its successful completion removed a restriction that would have required four reactors to close in 2010 or 2011. Instead, they are currently allowed to operate until 2019. This life extension represents a major contribution to the UK economy.
