Estimation of the convection heat transfer coefficient of coolant and prediction of the maximum temperature within the grinding zone
This paper resulted from an international collaboration with Tianjin University, China, and reported on research into the development of a new analytical tool for estimating convection cooling in the grinding zone. The analysis significantly improves the predictive capability of temperature models used for control of workpiece surface integrity – an important factor in high precision manufacturing. The simplicity and accuracy of the methodology allows application to a wide range of grinding regimes and demonstrates that cooling efficiency can be quantified by the convection coefficient of the coolant. The results closely correlate with direct estimations based on measured temperatures.
