This paper proved, for the first time, that it is possible to undertake High Efficiency Deep Grinding (HEDG) using a conventional alumina wheel. It highlights issues related to the machine performance and so laid the foundation for the development of a bespoke grinding machine tool via a collaborative TSB grant with: machine tool manufacturer (Jones&Shipman), grinding wheel manufacturer (TYROLIT) and machining table manufacturer (Bosch-Rexroth). This project (grant BD133H) developed a new HEDG Machine with vibration assistance. This in turn has led to further financial support from Rolls Royce to develop applications of the technique and a protoype machine.
