Additional information

In recognition of the importance of sustainability to the future agenda of interior design Chick was invited to contribute a chapter to the Designing the Modern Interior publication (Berg: 2009). The author selected Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) as the interior design case study because it is a pioneering development of socially and environmentally sustainable homes in the UK and there was archival documentation on the design of the domestic interiors and the residents’ response to their homes. In addition, there was the opportunity to interview the senior development team, residents and view the domestic interiors.

The BedZED architectural project has received much study but not with regards to the design of the inside spaces. The author, through a deductive reasoning strategy, undertaking social survey research, desk research, and site visits developed this book chapter. The primary and secondary research consisted of face to face semi-structured interviews with Bill Dunster (the lead architect and co-founder of the BedZED enterprise), two residents and BioRegional BedZED expert (while receiving guided tours of accommodation); two BedZED site visits; and study of photographic images of the inside spaces (authors and Bill Dunster Architects); review of 2007 BioRegional’s BedZED residents questionnaire data; and desk research.
