Additional information
Although the popular image of Hawai‘i is of an idyllic paradise, the islands are, in fact, home to one of the largest military arsenals in the world. Militarism has been so ingrained in Hawai‘i that its presence has come to be seen as normal and necessary. This monograph examines these issues in the states war monuments, museum, and depiction of its people in Hollywood films, presenting the US military as a welcome, protective force.
