English abstract

The first article to position Johann Nikolaus Forkel's 'General History of Music' (one of the major projects of music historiography in the late 18th century) in the context of his professional work and aspirations at the University of Göttingen and its History Department. The article explains features of the 'General History' as an attempt to match the standard set by writings of Göttingen historians, as an attempt to prove that music could be a 'proper' academic subject. This, in turn, is placed in the wider context of the development of enlightenment historiography, its aims and blind spots.
