Additional information

A novel hybrid excited switched-flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machine is developed (UK patent-GB2468695) based on a novel E-core SFPM machine which was also developed by the authors (UK patent-GB2468696). It reduces the amount of expensive rare-earth magnet by 50%, yet produces 15% higher torque density than that of the conventional SFPM machine and has adjustable flux capability for maximum efficiency operation. The initial result was presented at the IEEE VPPC2010 conference and awarded the top Paper Prize out of >400 papers. It was extended to mechanically flux adjusted SFPM machines and led to a successful TSB/EPSRC project with Nissan (TS/H001662/1).
