This research, detailing the design rules for complex integrated optical filters, has allowed the first demonstration of intra-cavity pulse shaping in mode-locked semiconductor lasers. This work directly led to new collaborations with the wider photonics community: with Universite Laval, Canada [sophie.larochelle@gel.ulaval.ca] via a visiting studentship (Simard, 08/11-02/12) to develop integrated multi-wavelength lasers using this technology; and with Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Montreal, Canada [azana@emt.inrs.ca] on the production of all-optical analogue signal processing devices in silicon using a direct translation of this work to a new material platform.
