Additional information

Reports discoveries from collaborative research across three Universities, involving rigorous forensic analysis of defective cable insulation from a power station electrical distribution network. Infrared and time-of-flight measurements were carried out at Strathclyde, X-ray computed tomography at Manchester University [Prof Philip Withers, p.j.withers@manchester.ac.uk] and scanning electron microscopy at Glasgow Caledonian University [Prof Chengke Zhou, c.zhou@gcu.ac.uk] [EP/G029210, £265.7k, 2009-2012]. The research underpins a successful research proposal to the Department of Energy and Climate Change to develop insulation monitoring technologies for offshore HVDC interconnectors, as part of a consortium being led by HVPD Ltd [Lee.Renforth@hvpd.co.uk]. This £2.5M project commences in November 2013.
