Additional information

Collaboration with Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal [Pereira, spereira@ua.pt, Trindade, tito@ua.pt] and University of Cambridge [colin.humphreys@msm.cam.ac.uk] featured on the journal cover. The novel hybrid nanostructures enable systematic study of interactions between metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum wells. Such effects are being explored in collaboration with University of North Texas [Neogi, arup@unt.edu], and the methodology allowed further studies of electrostatic interactions mediated by image charges (Physical Review B v.87, p.201304(R), 2013). These interactions offer enhanced optical emission in systems where resonant plasmonic effects cannot be exploited, and thus extend the application of the integration technique beyond the scope foreseen originally.
